VOLUME presents a three-person exhibition of new work by artists William Basinski, Chris Oliveria, and Steve Roden.
About the Artists
William Basinski is a classically trained musician and composer who has been working in experimental media for over 30 years in NYC and most recently, California. Employing obsolete technology and analogue tape loops, his haunting and melancholy soundscapes explore the temporal nature of life and resound with the reverberations of memory and the mystery of time. His epic 4-disc masterwork, The Disintegration Loops received international critical acclaim and was chosen as one of the top 50 albums of 2004 by Pitchfork Media. The Temporary Residence deluxe LP box-set reissue from 2012 was awarded best re-issue of the year and a score of 10 on Pitchfork. Installations and films made in collaboration with artist-filmmaker, James Elaine have been presented in festivals and museums internationally, and his concerts are presented to sold out crowds around the world. Most recently, Basinski was chosen by Music Director, Antony Hegarty to create music for the new Robert Wilson opera, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic which had its world premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2011 and toured Europe in 2012 and North America in 2013. Orchestral transcriptions of The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Queen Elizabeth Hall and La Batie Festival in Geneva, Switzerland. Basinski is currently touring the world in support of Cascade and The Deluge, his latest works which was released in Spring 2015 on 2062/USA.
Combining visual simplicity from late 20th century painting with fabric collage, Chris Oliveria creates work that gives painterly attention to surface, texture and color. The works, like our societies, cities, ideals, and languages, are simultaneously built up and torn down by the addition of new layers; the present pushing out or covering up the past. The result is a formally realized picture that is a chronology of the initial idea and process, steeped in it’s own history.
Oliveria was born in Chico California and became homeless at age 15. Saved by the outlets of art, skateboarding and the punk scene of the early eighties, he began showing his work in nightclubs in the SF bay area. He was invited by Dan Field to participate in a group show, “The Degenerates” at World Tattoo Gallery in Chicago, leading him to pursue a life as an artist. He received his MFA from the California College of the Arts, and holds a BFA from SFAI. Selected solo and group exhibitions include LAXART, Los Angeles; Chez Valentin, Paris; Galleria Wunderk in Valencia, Spain; San Jose Museum of Art; Kavi Gupta, Chicago; Lizabeth Oliveria Gallery; Wooster Art Museum, Ohio; The Luggage Store; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; and the Museum Of New Art, Detroit. Residencies include Headlands Center for the Arts; Creative Growth, Oakland; and Centro de Actividades Investiagiones Artisticas.
Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist from Los Angeles, living in Pasadena. His work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, sound installation, text and performance. Roden’s working process uses various forms of specific notation (words, musical scores, maps, etc.) and translates them through self invented systems into scores, which then influence the process of painting, drawing, sculpture, and composition. These scores, rigid in terms of their parameters and rules, are also full of holes for intuitive decisions, failures and left turns. The inspirational source material becomes a kind of formal skeleton that the abstract finished works are built upon.
Roden has been exhibiting his visual and sound works since the mid 1980′s, and has had numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally, including: Mercosur Biennial Porto Alegre Brazil, Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, UCLA Hammer Museum Los Angeles, Museum of Contemporary Art EMST Athens Greece, Singuhr-Horgalerie in Parochial Berlin, Center for Book Arts New York, The Kitchen New York, Pomona College Museum of Art, La Casa Encendida Madrid, Susanne Vielmetter LA and Berlin Projects, Studio la Citta Verona Italy, and others. In 2010, curator Howard Fox organized the exhibition “steve roden / in between: a 20 year survey”, which opened at the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, and was accompanied by a full color catalog.
