Land and Sea began during the final days of 2009 and have consistently been publishing small editions of books and records by artists from the Bay Area and beyond. Under the same moniker, Chris and Maria organize gatherings that celebrate the artists they work with as well as the communities they are a part of. Land and sea are proud to have their editions in the collections of the SFMOMA, the Berkeley Art Museum, Stanford Library, and MoMA.
About the Artists
Félicia Atkinson (born 1981 in Paris ) is graduated with Honors from l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris and studied also anthropology and contemporary dance ( BOCAL project with Boris Charmatz in 2003). She is a visual artist, an experimental musician and the co-publisher of the independent imprint Shelter Press/ curatorial platform Argument with Bartolomé Sanson. Here works deals mostly with the topics of improvisation, fiction, instant composition, noise, abstraction and poetry. Her paintings, drawings, sculpture, texts, installations, performances, and musical compositions are mostly abstract and are fed by multiples expeditions to many places such as Rio de Janeiro, Brittany and most often the american west, where she collect sounds, objects, materials and other diverse materials to her visual and sound works.
Paul Clipson is a San Francisco-based filmmaker who often collaborates with sound artists and musicians on films, live performances, and installations. His films and videos aim to bring to light visual preoccupations that reveal themselves while working in a stream of consciousness manner, combining densely layered, in-camera edited studies of figurative and abstract environments, in a process that encourages unplanned-for results, responding to and conversing with the temporal qualities of musical composition and live performance.
Kowalsky has performed throughout Europe and the United States; participating in festivals such as WDR’s SoundArt-Köln Festival, Mexico City’s Aural Festival, and most recently the Substrata Festival in Seattle, where he performed a commissioned six-channel piece for grand piano and electronics. His recordings have released on Kranky, Thrill Jockey, Rootstrata and Important Records. He has composed for sound installations, film and acoustic ensembles.
He currently resides in Los Angeles after a decade in Oakland, California where he completed a Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College under the tutelage of Fred Frith, Maggie Payne and Pauline Oliveros.
OFFING is the moniker for sound explorations by Oakland California based artist Chris Duncan(born 1974). After a decade of functioning primarily as a visual artist, recent years have found Duncan applying learned behaviors in image making to sound works. The open ended, often improvised, compositions are a sonic equivalent to his paintings- what you hear are slowly built atmospheres that are the accumulation of simple gestures, looped and layered to the point of transcendence. In a macro/micro analogy, Duncan pairs processed field recordings of natural forces such as the wind and the ocean with the use of his own breath(wind) via harmonicas and tonal, percussive elements(ocean) of tuning forks. Duncan lives and works in Oakland California, where he runs a project space and a small press with his wife called LAND AND SEA. He received is BFA in painting from CCAC, and his MFA from Stanford.
