12 SYMBOLS, composed by Chris Duncan, is an immersive sound performance and exhibition that metaphorically implicates the energy and patterns of the sun, moon, and the phenomenon of the eclipse to ponder our relationship to the passing of time.

Cymbals become symbols as 12 percussionists engage light, movement, and sound. The physical stage set by the initial performance of 12 SYMBOLS moves through phases throughout the course of the exhibition, welcoming a host of artists from Northern and Southern California alike in a series of performances.

The exhibition and performances are dedicated to the loving memory of Paul Clipson, a light and love gone too soon.

About the Artists

Tashi Wada is a Los Angeles-based composer and performer whose works explore harmonic overtones, resonance, and dissonance through precise tuning and gradual change in pitch. Grounded in a belief that “music should be as direct as possible,” his compositions use apparently simple structures to generate rich and unanticipated perceptual effects. Working in relation to American experimental music, microtonal music, and so-called drone music, Wada’s practice is also informed by interdisciplinary performance and Fluxus-affiliated artists. He studied composition at CalArts and for many years has performed alongside his father, composer Yoshi Wada.

Dicky Bahto lives in Los Angeles. He has exhibited work utilizing still and motion picture photography, sound, and performance at a variety of museums, galleries, microcinemas, film festivals, conferences, alternative spaces, and scenic locations spanning the Northern Hemisphere, including commissions from Monday Evening Concerts and The Huntington. As a member of the EPFC Co-op, he is a co-recipient of an inaugural Artist Project Grant from the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts. His interest in music has led him to both collaborate with and perform works by various composers, including Casey Anderson, Ashley Bellouin, Luciano Chessa, Carmina Escobar, Corey Fogel, Julia Holter, Sepand Shahab, Mark So, Laura Steenberge, and Tashi Wada.
