VOLUME presents a one-night screening of Johann Breiding’s Swarm, accompanied by a live sound performance by Geneva Skeen.
Swarm is a performance video documenting a collaborative action in Death Valley’s remote Eureka sand dunes, the second tallest in the nation. Participants included Oakwoods Death Valley Immersion class of 2014, with music composition and direction by Jules Gimbrone (1st iteration of Red Ants was made by Asterism Derivative in 2012). Skeen will use the soundtrack from the video as the basis for a new, improvised live score.
About the Artists
Johanna Breiding’s practice stems from photography, considering the medium’s history, its representational role and limits. Expanding to video and installation, to emphasize voice, movement and experiential pathos, Breiding locates her work within the intersection of analog and digital technologies, the construction of gender and cultural identity, and a critique of heternormative ideologies within the personal and social space. Her recent solo show, Epitaph for Family, addressed notions of queer family-making, exploring love, intimacy and loss through the image and connotations of the horizon line and the dinner table. Breiding currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in New Genres at the San Francisco Art Institute. She is based in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and originally from a small village in Switzerland.
Geneva Skeen is an interdisciplinary artist working in Los Angeles. Her solo and collaborative works have been performed or presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Human Resources (L.A.), Les Figues Press, on the rooftop of The Standard Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, and on the façade of the Armory building in Long Beach, California, amongst others. She graduated from Occidental College with a degree in Critical Theory & Social Justice and a minor in performance studies. She is an active member of VOLUME, a curatorial collective focused on sound-based practices.
